1922 Renault Model JV 40 HP Phaeton Landaulette

The “Quarante Cheveux,” or 40 HP, was the pinnacle of Renault’s broad range from its introduction in 1911 until the late 1920s. With its 9.1-liter six-cylinder engine and 17.5’ wheelbase, this majestic automobile maintained the brand’s stylistic hallmarks – including its brass-trimmed “coalscuttle” hood – only scaled to monumental proportions. The model has always been highly regarded among collectors for its quality which was equal to the finest luxury automobiles of its day.

This 40 HP carries commodious coachwork by the renowned Parisian carrossier Kellner, which can be configured as either an open-drive limousine or touring car. It is believed that the Renault was originally delivered to the US through Kellner’s New York subsidiary in 1922. By the 1970s, the Renault resided in the famed stable of Bill and Ann Klein of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, before passing in 1973 to Bud Josey, the proprietor of Dunedin’s Horse Carriage Shop in Florida. It subsequently returned to Europe, where it spent nearly 30 years in German and Swiss collections. It joined the Mullin Collection in 2003 and presents as a well-maintained older restoration.
