1923 'Jal Johnson Special' Sprint Car

Constructed in 1923 by Pacific Northwest racer Jal Johnson, this captivating Sprint Car Special embodies the ingenuity and resourcefulness that defined early American dirt-track competition. Built around a Ford Model T chassis and powered by a highly developed Chevrolet Continental W-4 engine, the car incorporates an impressive array of period speed equipment, including Ray Day aluminum pistons, front-drive oil pump, Robert Roof cylinder head and camshaft, Winfield carburetor, Franklin steering, Buffalo wire wheels, and a lightweight aluminum single-seat body. In 1937, Johnson updated the machine with a lengthened frame, streamlined headrest, and additional mechanical improvements. Although Johnson never raced the car himself, he was a familiar figure throughout the Pacific Northwest racing scene and earned the coveted no. 4, traditionally reserved for the region’s most active competitors. Driven in period by Jack Turner, Bill Maloney, Pike Green, Bud Green, and others, the car was a frequent entrant at race venues across the Northwest, remaining active until its final appearance at Yakima Speedway in 1953. Acquired directly from Johnson in 1978 by noted collector and Vintage Auto Parts proprietor Terry Jarvis, the car remained in his stewardship for nearly five decades. This remarkably original racing special stands as a tangible tribute to the creativity and determination of America’s formative motorsport pioneers.
