While likely unknown to all but the most ardent enthusiasts and collectors of vintage and classic French motorcars, Turcat-Méry delivered outstanding engineering and scored numerous racing achievements during its active years spanning 1899 to 1928. Actually, the firm’s origins date more correctly to 1895, when Marseille resident Alphonse Méry purchased a Panhard et Levassor and a Peugeot. His younger brother Simon and brother-in-law Leon Turcat were both engineers and they designed an improved model, based on both cars. To say they succeeded is an understatement, with the resulting Turcat-Méry a hothouse of advanced engineering and specifications. Henri Rougier, the firm’s Paris agent, served as chief publicist and went on to gain renown in motor racing, rallying, and early aviation. Among Rougier’s many achievements, he earned a 3rd place podium in the 1909 Gordon Bennett Cup and won the inaugural and controversial Monte Carlo Rally in 1911 – both with a Turcat-Méry.

Automobile production was suspended during WWI in favor of munitions manufacturing and the difficult postwar economy nearly ended Turcat-Méry. However, engineering excellence defined the marque and its stylish luxury automobiles earned a loyal following until production ended in 1928, followed by a parts and service enterprise that lasted until 1933. This handsomely presented 1924 Turcat-Méry Type UG Limousine is an exceedingly rare and engaging offering, powered by an overhead-cam, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with fixed-head construction.

Finished in a deep burgundy and light-yellow livery, accented by light yellow spoked wheels, this 1924 Turcat-Méry Type UG Limousine was likely owned by a wealthy and discerning individual when new. Riding a generous 130" wheelbase chassis, the fully enclosed limousine body is appointed with a formal central division window and folding jump seats to the lower bulkhead, plus patinated and startlingly preserved black leather upholstery to the chauffeur’s compartment up front and nicely presented beige pleated cloth to the rear. Abundant wooden accents add appropriate elegance to this sober yet striking Turcat-Méry Limousine.
