Delage’s First Eight-Cylinder Model and the Pinnacle Offering as an Independent Company

A Beautifully Designed Four-Place Drophead Delage; Perfect for Restoration

An engineer by trade, Pierre Louis Delage began building automobiles in 1905, in Levallois, outside Paris; their quality of construction and stylish designs allowed the company to gain popularity quickly. Always pursuing innovation through competition, four-, six-, and finally eight-cylinder Delage engines were produced for the cars over the ensuing decades. The D8 series proved to be the zenith of the company’s road car offerings before it was acquired by Delahaye in 1935.

This attractive D8S is built on the 130" wheelbase, the shortest and most sporting of the line, and is fitted with open four-place coachwork by Carrosserie Duvivier, according to the emblem fitted to the scuttle. It presents in largely complete, unrestored condition. A typewritten document on file, dated April 1, 1965 appears to record its purchase by the Schlumpf Collection, where it would remain until being acquired by the Mullin Collection in 2008.

Finished long ago in monochromatic black paint, this beautifully proportioned drophead is a testament to the accomplishments of Louis Delage and his company during its final years of independence, and is an outstanding candidate for restoration.

*Please note that all of the Lots in this Auction have been in long-term static storage at the Mullin Automotive Museum and may not be currently operational. They will require mechanical attention and in some cases significant restoration prior to any road use.
