The 102-Series 2000 Spider marked yet another open Alfa Romeo grand touring car reminiscent of its elegant prewar cabriolets. Bodied by Carrozzeria Touring, the Spider’s clean, minimally adorned coachwork has aged exceptionally well alongside contemporaries such as the Maserati 3500 and Lancia Flaminia. The tipo 102 engine is an evolution of the cast-iron block, inline four-cylinder of the 1900-Series cars. Renowned for its reliability, the engine featured twin Solex carburetors and a more modern valve train, making a sprightly 115 hp. Coupled with a five-speed synchromesh gearbox and relaxed highway gearing, the 2000 Spider excelled at long-distance touring in comfort and style. More than 3,400 examples were built before production ended in 1962.
According to one account, this Alfa Romeo Spider was completed in early 1959, and first delivered via Hoffman Motor Car Company on New York City’s Park Avenue. A three-year cosmetic and mechanical restoration is said to have commenced in 2013, including a bare-metal repaint in Grigio Biacca (Chalk Gray), a retrim of the interior, and restoration of the brightwork. Mechanically, the engine, gearbox, suspension, and braking systems all reportedly received thorough refurbishment. Beautiful from any angle and comfortable on longer adventures, these Touring-bodied Spiders are a distinctive entry into any show or driving event, and the example presented here is a handsome thoroughbred that can be enjoyed by any new or seasoned Alfa Romeo enthusiast.
