Manufactured between 1955 and 1966, the Peugeot 403 was among the most popular mid-size cars produced in France. In fact, the 403 was the first Peugeot model to exceed one million in sales. Styled by Italian design house Pinin Farina and powered by a selection of four-cylinder gas and diesel engines, the 403 was offered in several variants throughout its production run, including a four-door sedan, five-door estate, two-door convertible, and even a two-door pickup called the Camionette. Rugged and versatile, the 403 earned a reputation for its impressive build quality and low maintenance – even Road & Track magazine called it “one of the seven best made cars in the world.”

Offering a payload of 850 kg, the Camionette Bachée was a true workhorse, easily adapted to a variety of commercial uses. Peugeot’s own sales literature claimed that “its qualities of mechanical robustness, economy in consumption and maintenance, high comfort and safety make the 403 U8 Canvas Van the effective solution to all rapid transport problems with loads of a diverse nature.”

A model rarely seen or offered for sale in the US, this 403 Camionette was acquired by the Mullin Collection in September 2014 via Dutch classic car dealer Jack Braam Ruben. Currently finished in gray and tastefully presented in stock condition, this is a fine example of a rare mid-century French classic, which can be potentially enjoyed for a variety of commercial and recreational uses – just as Peugeot had originally intended.
