Introduced at the 1958 Paris Motor Show, the DB4 was a masterpiece of modern engineering. It featured styling by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, the coachwork constructed using the *Superleggera *(Super light) method of aluminum panels over a tubular framework. Featuring a glorious Tadek Marek-designed 3.7-litre straight-six engine, the DB4 is the progenitor of the mystique that the marque still enjoys today.

According to a copy of its build record on file, this 1960 DB4 Series I, a factory left-hand-drive example, was equipped from new with a four-speed manual gearbox, overdrive, and a 3.77:1 Powr-Lok differential. On April 10, 1961, it was delivered to its first owner, Philip A. Litchfield of Katonah, New York. Mr. Litchfield retained the DB4 until 1991. Michael Brinkert of Recklinghausen, Germany, was the next known owner, and a previous description on file notes that a restoration was completed in Europe in the early 2000s. The engine was rebuilt in 2001 by the well-known UK specialists at Aston Engineering. Documented by records on file, the rebuild included a displacement increase to 4.2 litres and installation of Cosworth pistons and larger valves.

In 2004, the Aston Martin returned to the US and was subsequently acquired by Aston Martin specialist Tom Papadopoulos of Autosport Designs Inc. in New York. A description on file notes that the gearbox and differential were rebuilt and that the engine received an upgraded intake system featuring three SU carburetors. The Aston Martin was also updated with the installation of a Harvey Bailey suspension package. Papadopoulos exhibited the DB4 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in August 2014, before selling it to Tom Larsen. During his ownership, Mr. Larsen participated in a number of events and concours, including the 2016 Copperstate 1000 Rally in Arizona and the 2015 Sunday in the Park Concours at Lime Rock Park, where the DB4 placed Second in Class.

Accompanying this DB4 Series I is a wealth of documents, including correspondence, service records, photographs, and a copy of its factory build record. The DB4 is further accompanied by a manual, tool roll, jack, and spare. As the foundation of the revered Aston Martin DB4/DB5/DB6 dynasty, this DB4 Series I is a product of Aston Martin’s true glory days. The company had just won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 and was in the midst of an epic battle with Ferrari, Maserati, and Jaguar.
