Restoration Project of a Highly Innovative Citroën Model

Acquired by the Mullin Collection in 2015

Envisioned as a Recreation of the Famous “Balloon Car”

Have a similar car that you would like to put up for an auction?

Just as it had done 21 years previously with the innovative Traction Avant, Citroën stunned the motoring world in 1955 with its the launch of the revolutionary DS. Sporting a futuristic, aero-efficient body shell and fully independent self-levelling, hydropneumatic suspension, plus power-operated brakes, clutch, and steering, the DS was immediately successful and influential. Debuted at the 1956 Paris Salon, the simplified ID19 version became available, initially without the interior and exterior trim and comprehensive hydraulic power-assists of the “senior” DS, although they were gradually added to the more basic ID19 as production continued until 1969.

Fresh, attention-grabbing advertisements and promotions heightened attention on Citroën’s latest models, including an unforgettable artwork featuring a DS mounted atop four red balloons, highlighting the comfort and balance afforded by the new car’s industry-leading hydropneumatic suspension. This ID19 was purchased by the Mullin Collection in 2015, with the goal of recreating the Citroën “Balloon Car,” however this vision never materialized. Presented today in project form, the ID19 retains its identification tags underhood and it could certainly provide the basis for restoration or conversion into an “art car,” with the choice entirely yours.

*Please note that all of the Lots in this Auction have been in long-term static storage at the Mullin Automotive Museum and may not be currently operational. They will require mechanical attention and in some cases significant restoration prior to any road use.
