1962 Porsche 356 B Super 90 'Twin Grille' Roadster

Introduced for 1960, the Porsche 356 B incorporated a series of thoughtful styling and engineering refinements, including revised bodywork and improved steering, brakes, and gearbox. For 1962, Porsche unveiled the updated T-6 body style, distinguished by its external fuel filler, enlarged front luggage compartment, and numerous detail improvements. Among the most desirable variants of the 356, the rare T-6 Roadster served as a lighter, more sporting alternative to the Cabriolet. Hand-built by Belgian coachbuilder D’Ieteren Frères, these distinctive, late-production Roadsters were characterized by their signature twin engine-lid grilles.

Completed on December 14, 1961, this 356 B “Twin Grille” Roadster was delivered through Islinger Porsche in Mannheim, Germany, to Dr. Werner Ehrenpreis of Fullerton, California. One of only 248 Twin Grille Roadsters built – and one of the 51 examples equipped with Porsche’s coveted Super 90 engine – it was originally finished in black over a red leatherette interior. The accompanying factory records document an extensive list of options, including headrests, fog lamps, seat belts, a cigarette lighter, radio with antenna and loudspeakers, tonneau cover, chrome wheels, luggage rack, and other desirable appointments.

The Roadster’s well-documented history reflects long-term ownership by a succession of knowledgeable Porsche collectors. After passing through the ownership of Gary Dixon, the Roadster was acquired by Patrick Patterson, who commissioned noted Porsche specialist Bob Campbell to perform an extensive restoration in its original color scheme. The quality of the restoration was recognized with First in Class honors at the Porsche 356 Club Concours in Monterey in both 1996 and 1997.

In 2007, the Roadster joined the collection of respected Porsche historian, former racer, and Twin-Grille Roadster registrar Alex Dearborn. During his 12-year stewardship, the car benefited from an engine rebuild by George Nelson, a transaxle overhaul by Vic Skirmants, and numerous thoughtful improvements. Under Dearborn’s care, the Roadster earned Best of Show honors at the Porsche 356 Florida Owners Group event in 2014 and received further recognition at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance the following year. Acquired by the current owner in 2019, the Roadster was subsequently entrusted to renowned Porsche authority John Willhoit for an extensive mechanical transformation. Completed during 2019–2020, the project included installation of a WR-specification 2.2-liter twin-plug engine producing approximately 160 hp, a five-speed gearbox, 12-volt electrical conversion, and upgraded suspension and braking systems. A set of rare, original date-stamped Rudge knock-off wheels, including a matching spare, were also sourced at great expense.

Enjoyed on the Colorado Grand in 2021 and 2025, this rare Super 90 Twin Grille Roadster is accompanied by its original matching-numbers engine (no. 804499) and gearbox, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, tool kit, and extensive documentation.
