One of the most successful racing-homologation specials built during Ford Motor Company’s glorious 1960s “Total Performance” corporate racing program was the Lotus-tuned Ford Cortina built specifically for Group 2 competition. Powered by the Lotus-developed Ford “Kent” engine with special DOHC cylinder head, the four-speed gearbox from the Lotus Elan, chassis tuning, and other modifications, the Ford Cortina Lotus proved utterly dominant and solidified the careers of the era’s top drivers in circuit races and on rally stages.
While normally based on the Mk I (1963–1966) or Mk 2 (1967–1970) two-door Cortina saloon bodyshell, the Lotus concept captivated legions of racing fans and spurred the creation of this captivating Mk I Cortina Lotus Estate, restored and built to full Lotus Cortina specification and appearance under former owner Robert Herzog of Illinois. A five-speed gearbox delivers even better performance. In August 2016, the Cortina was purchased by a Californian owner and then it joined a prominent Indiana-based collection from which it was purchased by the consignor. Featuring exceptional detailing and authenticity, the Cortina is a standout with its Ermine White paint finish and period-style Minilite wheels. Accompanying items include a book by Mr. Herzog chronicling the restoration and build process, plus detailed receipts, an original Ford Cortina owner’s manual, and a copy of Vintage Motorsport featuring this imaginative and immensely detailed build. As beautiful as it is capable, this alluring custom is an exceptional proposition for Cortina fans everywhere.
