Added to Citroën’s model lineup in 1961, the Ami 6 combined the rational and economical basic foundation of the 2CV with ultra-modern design by longtime Citroën engineer Flaminio Bertoni, who spearheaded the company’s designs since the prewar Traction Avant. By 1964, the original and ultra-modern Ami 6 Berline (Sedan) was supplemented by the handsomely styled Ami 6 Break (Wagon) and Commerciale, which differed from the Break solely with deletion of the rear seat. Featuring more pleasing styling with the longer wagon roof, the Ami 6 delivered exceptional cargo capacity measuring 53 cubic feet with the rear seat removed, making it ideal for small families, businesses, and farmers, consistent with its beloved forebear, the 2CV. Interestingly, the Ami 6 Break was such a success, it gradually outsold the Berline by a wide margin.

Powered by a 602 cc boxer-style, air-cooled engine and four-speed gearbox, the Ami 6 received methodical updates making it and its variations even better than before, including the optional availability of the 2CV’s centrifugal clutch for 1963 and 12-volt electrics by 1966. Body styles included the traditional Berline, Break, and upmarket Club versions added by 1968, and distinguished by rounded headlamps. All in all, the Ami 6 demonstrated and advanced the amazing versatility of Citroën’s automobiles.

According to copies of prior registration documents on file, this 1968 Citroën Ami 6 Break was purchased new in October 1968 by a resident of Loiret in north-central France, who obtained a new Carte Grise in October 1999 and retained the vehicle until February 2010. In 2015, the Mullin Collection acquired the Ami 6 in Europe. In addition to its interesting styling, this Ami 6 is equipped with front and rear bumper guards, a roof-mounted cargo rack, rear-window blinds, and of course Citroën’s trademark single-spoke steering wheel with dash-mounted gearshift lever, plus other fascinating cues and features. Rarely seen in the US, this charming and distinctive Citroën is sure to cause a stir wherever it appears.
