As the dune buggy craze swept through the West Coast’s beach culture, the East Coast felt largely left out of the fun. Ken Allison, owner of a highly regarded paint and fiberglass body shop in Daytona Beach, Florida, saw an opportunity and began building the Allison Daytona. His creations quickly became known for their high-quality, handlaid fiberglass bodies and striking finishes.
This 1969 Allison Daytona Dune Buggy was discovered in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, by a noted collector of highly original vehicles. Today, it remains resplendent in its original metalflake silver and red gel coat, with brilliant white interior. The odometer reads less than 5,700 miles. An early short-wheelbase model, this Daytona retains charming Allison-installed components including “wide-five” slotted wheels, pop-up gas cap borrowed from Dodge, and R.E. Dietz Company lights manufactured in New York. Included in the sale are the original red convertible top and side curtains, which transform the car’s look and make it usable even in non-beach weather.
Allison built approximately 600 of these striking and high-quality Daytona Dune Buggies, and it is rare to find such a beautifully preserved example. In wonderfully original condition and relying on dependable Volkswagen mechanicals, this Allison Daytona stands ready for display, rally, or the open-air pursuit of an endless summer.
Please note that this vehicle is titled as a Volkswagen.
