1970 Pontiac Firebird One

Conceived as a vision of the Firebird decades ahead of its time, this one-off prototype began life as a stock 1970 Pontiac Firebird. Over four years, GM Technical Designer Dave Crook transformed the vision into a reality, working from drawings by Harry Bentley Bradley, the GM stylist behind the Dodge Deora and the Hot Wheels line. Crook faithfully translated Bradley’s sketches into an impressive and influential form: a dramatically lowered body, skirted rear wheels, six hood scoops, and an aerodynamically studied nose that hinted at the look GM’s performance cars would later adopt.

Inside, bolstered bucket seats sat behind a production-sourced steering wheel and gauge cluster, with a spare tire mounted behind the seats; even the glass was genuine safety glass, not the usual show-car acrylic. Power came from a 350 cid Pontiac V-8 and automatic gearbox, and unlike most concepts of the period, this one was engineered to be road-going.

Vice President of Styling Bill Mitchell was reportedly so taken with the result that there was talk of adopting the One as an official GM display car. However, shifting industry priorities toward efficiency and safety intervened. Accompanied by its original development file and Bradley’s sketches, this Firebird One remains the only example built – a rare survivor of GM’s design ambition that will make a stunningly unique addition to any collection.
