Created in the Mercedes-Benz tradition of quality, engineering, and luxury, the W111 generation reached its pinnacle with the 280 SE 3.5. It introduced V-8 power to a Mercedes-Benz Coupe for the first time, adding heightened performance to the car’s virtues and furthering the heritage of the prestigious firm.

This 3.5 Coupe was originally delivered to Wetzel Motor Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 31, 1971, and is desirably equipped with floor-shift transmission, Behr air-conditioning, and Becker Europa radio. Finished in the fabulous 1970s combination of Tobacco Brown (DB 423) with cognac leather interior, this car remained in Pennsylvania until 2002, when it was acquired by a collector in New England.

Throughout its life, this car was conscientiously maintained by reputable shops, including Hatch & Sons and, notably, Jim Cosgrove’s OldTimer Restoration Center, which performed almost $120,000 of work under the previous owner’s care. This included a repaint in the original color, restoration of major mechanical systems, and refinished interior wood trim. The majority of the original interior upholstery was retained, now showing a charming patina.

With only 3,270 built during a brief 18-month production run, 3.5 Coupes have always been prized. These svelte Coupes possess the inspired notched C-pillar and beautiful rear window that is lost on the cabriolet version, and this example’s exceptional integrity, presentation, and ideal configuration set it apart as an unusually fine example for the enthusiast seeking the best.
