Developed from Volkswagen’s Type 181 military utility vehicle, the Thing brought a practical German interpretation of open-air motoring to American showrooms for 1973. Its pressed-steel body, removable doors, folding windshield, and convertible top gave it a purposeful appearance, while Beetle-derived mechanicals made it economical and straightforward to maintain. Though offered in the US for only two model years, the Thing earned an enthusiastic following.

This 1973 Thing is finished in wonderfully extroverted Pumpkin Orange with a black interior and matching convertible top. Side curtains provide additional weather protection without diminishing the Thing’s elemental charm. Its odometer displays approximately 34,500 miles at the time of cataloguing.

The Volkswagen’s current caretaker, a New York-based collector whose stable includes period Volkswagen-powered dune buggies and air-cooled Porsches, has continued to enjoy and maintain the car in the spirit intended. Under his ownership, its air-cooled flat-four engine was rebuilt with new Mahle pistons, and the Thing has since been enjoyed on fair-weather outings around Long Island.

Supported by abundant parts and specialist knowledge, the Thing offers a refreshing alternative to conventional collector cars.
