From inception, France’s Citroën has been responsible for some of the most innovative and unique automobiles ever produced, from the front-drive Traction Avant originated during the 1930s to the advanced DS series and likely the marque’s finest, the SM (Série Maserati). Developed in the wake of the Citroën-Maserati merger in 1968, the SM featured Citroën’s renowned front-drive chassis and super-smooth hydropneumatic suspension, with power delivered by a four-cam Maserati V-6 engine. The stunning and aerodynamically tapered two-door body was designed by Robert Opron and remains fresh today. A true grand touring car capable of fast transcontinental dashes or high-speed executive commutes, the SM remains iconic today. According to marque experts, 12,920 were produced from 1970 through 1975, including a handful of coachbuilt versions by Chapron, with just 1,200 North American imports.

According to a history summary by the Mullin Museum on file, this 1974 Citroën SM was sold new to an Australian resident in Amsterdam, who reportedly used it lightly, followed by a Dutch company director. Under the third owner, the engine was replaced with a reconditioned unit during the 1980s. A repaint was performed to high standards in the original gold leaf color and the tan leather interior remains impressive. It is believed that while under the three Dutch owners, the SM was maintained by Citroën Amsterdam. In 2013, the SM was purchased by the Mullin Collection. This highly collectible 1974 Citroën SM is accompanied by purchase and import paperwork and prior owner registrations from the Netherlands.
