1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS

Born from the visionary mind of Enzo Ferrari himself and named in loving memory of his son Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari, the Dino marked Ferrari’s entry into the mid-engine sports car segment. Originally unveiled in 1967 as the 206 GT, the Dino was continuously improved and updated throughout its production run, resulting in the updated 2.4-liter 246 GT and targa-top 246 GTS.

Consistently ranked among the most beautiful and engaging automobiles ever conceived, the Dino was an inspired product of Ferrari’s highly successful V-6 engine development program of the 1950s and 1960s. The two-liter 206 GT and 2.4-liter 246 GT/ GTS road cars, together with their Fiat Coupe and Spider counterparts, enabled Scuderia Ferrari to meet the FISA-mandated 500-car production requirement to homologate the Dino V-6 engine for Formula 2 competition beginning in 1967.

This original US-delivery 246 GTS, chassis 08466, was imported new through Chinetti Garthwaite and finished from the factory in striking Blu Chiaro Metallizzato (Light Blue Metallic) over a Nuvola (Cloud) light blue leather interior, per its accompanying report by model expert Matthias Bartz. The Ferrari was owned by a series of American collectors before being offered at Christie’s Pebble Beach auction in 2000, where the 24,240 miles shown were noted as being believed original from new.

The consignor purchased the car in 2001 from a Long Island dealer with 24,315 miles on the odometer, and it has remained in his stable ever since. An avid vintage racer and Ferrari collector, the consignor has had Ferrari specialists maintain and refresh it as needed, documented by more than 40 pages of records and extensive photos on file. This work included a rebuild of the engine, suspension, and gearbox, among other mechanical items.

The current owner reports that he had the leather on the seats replaced, but that the mousehair dash and carpets were never replaced in his ownership and he believes they may be original. Showing less than 33,000 miles when catalogued, this is an outstanding example of a 246 GTS in extremely desirable colors that has never required a full restoration and has instead been sympathetically maintained.

Fitting for an example of this quality, the Dino is accompanied by its manuals inside their folio as well as a tool kit and jack, along with other accessories. With its rare color combination, extensive documentation, and timeless Pininfarina styling, this is a particularly appealing Dino that would impress even the most seasoned Ferrari collector. The Ferrari has been cared for by a knowledgeable enthusiast for the last 25 years, remaining a beloved part of his impressive collection of sports and racing cars. The Dino’s Blu Chiaro Metallizzato paint perfectly highlights the purity of Pininfarina’s landmark design, and it stands as an exceptional example of this iconic model, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful postwar sports cars ever built.
