Introduced in 1979 to commemorate one of motorcycling’s most celebrated comeback victories, the Mike Hailwood Replica pays tribute to Mike Hailwood’s remarkable triumph at the 1978 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Then 38 years old, Hailwood had retired from motorcycle racing in 1967 and had not competed at the Isle of Man for 11 years. Nevertheless, he caught leader Phil Read by lap three and went on to win by more than two minutes, averaging 108.51 mph. The achievement captured the imagination of the motorcycling world and prompted Ducati to produce a road-going tribute. Initially conceived as a limited homologation model, just 200 examples were built for 1979, though overwhelming demand would keep the Mike Hailwood Replica in production through 1986.
This remarkably preserved 1983 example displayed a scant 907 miles when catalogued. It was described in a previous 2019 advertisement, when it displayed just 905 miles, as remaining in its original paint and almost entirely original throughout, apart from its tires. Further distinguishing this example is its factory electric starter, a desirable feature that was only fitted to approximately 20% of MHRs produced. Combining originality, remarkably low mileage, and Ducati’s celebrated bevel-drive 900 cc V-twin, this Mike Hailwood Replica represents an especially compelling example of one of the marque’s most recognizable and collectible motorcycles.
