Unveiled in 1984, the Ferrari Testarossa was among the defining automobiles of its decade. Pininfarina’s extraordinarily wide, low body, long straked side intakes, and broad rear grille gave it a presence unlike any Ferrari before it. The design was as purposeful as it was dramatic: the intakes fed radiators flanking the mid-mounted engine, while the broad rear bodywork housed the 4.9-liter, 48-valve flat-12. Paired with a five-speed manual transaxle, this remarkable engine gave the Testarossa the performance expected of Ferrari’s flagship, together with the composure and refinement of a true gran turismo. Few cars are so closely identified with the 1980s, yet the Testarossa’s lasting appeal extends well beyond its familiar image. Its naturally aspirated 12-cylinder engine, gated shifter, and unexpectedly accommodating cabin reward the driver over distances both short and long. The Pininfarina styling remains extraordinary: a narrow nose opening into sculptural rear quarters, with horizontal strakes that have become one of the most recognizable designs in Ferrari history. The 1988 US-specification example offered here is especially striking in its seldom-seen factory black over black color combination. The monochromatic scheme gives the bodywork a restrained, almost architectural quality, emphasizing its dramatic proportions and details. Its five-spoke, single-nut center-lock wheels identify this as a desirable monodado Testarossa. The original warranty card records its initial delivery in January 1988 to George Carpenter, a Texas real estate developer, via Giuseppe Risi’s Ferrari of Houston. The accompanying CARFAX Report first places the Testarossa in Houston. Later entries trace its passage through Missouri, Oregon, and California, with a particularly substantial record of its years in the Pacific Northwest. The known service record provides further insight into the Ferrari’s care. A major engine-out service was performed by Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo in 2006, and another comprehensive major service followed in 2015 at 17,537 miles. These were accompanied by routine maintenance and repairs documented through the intervening years. In 2024, Ferrari of Silicon Valley completed a further engine-out major service, including timing belts and significant associated mechanical work. Together, these records support this being a low-mileage car that has received meaningful maintenance in recent years. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer displayed 19,880 miles, just 226 miles beyond the reading recorded upon completion of the 2024 service. Most recently part of a private collection focused on 12-cylinder Ferraris and Lamborghinis, the Testarossa is accompanied by its original books, including the warranty card, as well as its tools, jack, and a substantial file of service records. The CARFAX Report last records 19,803 miles in August 2024. With its seldom-seen color scheme, center-lock wheels, modest displayed mileage, and documented service, this Testarossa brings together qualities prized by collectors of the model. It is an appealing example of a Ferrari that remains as fascinating for its engineering and grand-touring character as it is for its unforgettable design.
