1989 Porsche 930 Slantnose Cabriolet

Porsche’s legendary 930 Turbo redefined the high-performance sports car when it debuted in 1975, combining dramatic styling with explosive turbocharged performance.

As the model evolved, Porsche continued to refine both its engineering and appearance, while its exclusive Sonderwunsch-Programm (Special Order Program) allowed discerning clients to commission highly individualized examples. Influenced by its dominant 935 race car, the Sonderwunsch- Programm began offering a 930 with a Flachbau – or “Flatnose” – starting in 1981. This option replaced the 930’s standard front end with a vented, sloping nose for better aerodynamics.

When increasingly stringent US emissions regulations forced Porsche to withdraw the 930 from the American market after 1979, production for the US came to an abrupt halt. Following a hiatus of more than six years and the development of a sophisticated electronic engine-management system to meet federal emissions requirements, the Turbo triumphantly returned for the 1986 model year. From 1987 to 1989, the M505 Slantnose option was made available to US clients and was an option costing over $23,000 on US Porsche dealers’ price lists.

This fantastic 930 is one of only 50 Slantnose Cabriolets built for the American market for 1989, the final year for the model. This is particularly noteworthy as 1989 was the only year that the 930 featured the upgraded and much-loved G50 five-speed transaxle.

This Slantnose was sold new by Delon Porsche in Salem, Oregon, and delivered in a gorgeous triple-black color scheme. In addition to the M505 Slantnose option, listed as $29,555 on an accompanying copy of the car’s window sticker, the Porsche was also specified with a Blaupunkt Reno radio, limited-slip differential, additional amplifier, and a nearly $4,000 Dark Rootwood Dashboard. The window sticker documents that the 930’s MSRP was over $120,000, a staggering figure for the time.

Driven sparingly throughout its life, the Porsche had accrued only 5,632 miles by 2008, according to its CARFAX Vehicle History Report. Displaying less than 7,800 miles when catalogued, the 930 presents in lovely condition today. Fitting for a low-mileage example of this caliber, the car is accompanied by manuals, air compressor, jack, tool roll, and copy of window sticker.

Impressively, the Porsche still retains many hallmarks of originality, including its option code sticker under the front trunk lid, among other stickers and markings. While all factory Slantnose Turbos are desirable, a triple-black, final-model-year example displaying less than 8,000 miles stands apart as particularly special, and is sure to interest even the most seasoned Porsche enthusiast.
