Introduced in 1974 Volkswagen’s Golf ranks among the world’s most successful automobiles. Its performance legend began in 1976 with the original Golf GTI – the front-wheel-drive “hot hatch” that brought sharp handling, useful practicality, and European flair to a new generation of enthusiasts. The Mk II Golf, introduced in 1984, featured a high-revving DOHC 16-valve engine rated at 137 hp, giving the model a stronger, more focused performance identity through 1992.
