1997 Land Rover Defender 90

Few automobiles are as admired and recognizable as the Land Rover Defender. Renowned for its exceptional off-road performance and legendary 4x4 ability, it has earned a reputation as one of the most rugged and dependable vehicles ever built. Its durability and go-anywhere capability have made it the first choice for adventurers and professionals alike.

This example was delivered new to Japan, and resided there for much of its life before being imported to the US in 2017. Crucially, unlike other Rest of World (ROW) Defender 90s, which received the 3.5-liter V-8 engine, Japanese-market examples were all fitted with the North American Specification (NAS) 4.0-liter V-8, giving these cars the highest performance the factory had to offer. Unique Japanese-market details include amber upper parking lights, smaller front-side markers, and a sticker indicating that only high-octane fuel be used.

Finished in Arles Blue and contrasted by a white safari roof over a gray interior, this Defender presents exceptionally well today. Additional features on this example are factory power windows – which were not available on NAS examples – a Japanese aftermarket radio, and a pair of tubular side steps.
