Few modern four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles have achieved the enduring cult status of the Land Rover Defender. For 1997, its final year of US importation, the Defender 90 received the 4.0-liter V-8 with a four-speed automatic transmission, representing the ultimate evolution of the North American-specification Defender 90. The soft-top variant retained the model’s safari character, with permanent four-wheel drive, dual-range transfer case, and roll cage, offering open-air versatility that has become synonymous with the marque.
Finished in the desirable shade of Monza Red, this Defender 90 is one of about 180 examples built in this color in the final year of North American importation. Delivered new on July 22, 1997, via Land Rover of San Antonio, Texas, it would go on to live in the state with its first owner until 2008. Subsequently, only three owners have lovingly cared for the Defender, accumulating just 45,100 miles. Its meticulous stewardship is evidenced in everything from its superb paint down to its intact factory floor mats – a rare find 30 years on. Also, a recent service by Rover specialist Cityside Garage, including new sway bars, front and rear differentials, and BF Goodrich tires was completed. This final-year NAS Defender offers the rare chance to acquire a well-preserved example and is now ready for its next caretaker.
