Profiled in a 2009 Issue of Automobile
Introduced in 2008, the Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse represented the most focused competition interpretation of Fiat’s celebrated modern 500. Developed exclusively for circuit use, the Assetto Corse embodied the philosophy that had defined Carlo Abarth’s creations for decades: extracting remarkable performance from a small, lightweight automobile. The first 49 examples were constructed as a special limited run, the production figure deliberately commemorating Abarth’s founding in 1949. Offered directly through Abarth headquarters in Torino, these cars were distinguished by Campovolo Grey paint with red Abarth graphics and individually numbered dashboard plaques. Their competition specification included a turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing approximately 200 hp, a six-speed gearbox, Brembo brakes, racing suspension, extensive weight reduction, and a fully prepared competition interior.
The example offered here was acquired new directly from the factory by a prominent marque enthusiast and subsequently became part of his impressive collection of Italian cars, which includes some of the greatest Abarths. Driven less than 1,200 km (745 miles) on the track, this is an exceptionally preserved example of a rare modern Fiat Abarth competition machine.
