When Aston Martin and legendary Italian coachbuilder Zagato join forces, the results are invariably remarkable. Their collaboration, which began in the early 1960s, has produced some of the marques most celebrated and collectible automobiles, each blending British engineering with distinctive Italian styling. The first, the DB4 GT Zagato, remains one of the most revered sports cars ever built.
Over the years, Aston Martin and Zagato have reunited on a select number of special projects, from the angular Vantage Zagato of the late 1980s to the flowing DB7 Zagato and open-top DB AR1 of the early 2000s. In 2016, however, the two companies embarked on their most ambitious collaboration yet: the Vanquish Zagato.
First shown at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in coupe form, the Vanquish Zagato would ultimately be offered in four body styles: Coupe, Volante, Shooting Brake, and Speedster – the first time Aston Martin and Zagato had created a complete family of complementary coachbuilt models. All featured full carbon fiber bodywork, distinctive “Z” design motifs in the grille and rear mesh, and dramatic LED taillamps. In total, just 325 examples were built worldwide.
Of the 99 Volantes produced, this example is number 74, and one of about 12 that were sent to the US. Finished in Escaping White over Obsidian Black and Spicy Red leather, this Vanquish Zagato was sold new via Aston Martin of Long Island, and showed just 464 miles at the time of cataloguing.
With an MSRP of $847,659, this Vanquish Zagato was fitted with over $23,000 in factory options. To contrast the Escaping White exterior paint, the car has been fitted with carbon fiber side strakes, black side-window surrounds, and black textured tailpipes. The 15-spoke Zagato wheels are finished in gloss black and sit in front of red brake calipers.
On the interior, the front seats feature Spicy Red outer bolsters with Obsidian Black centers and black upper sections with a Zagato Z-motif stitched in bright red. This unique Z stitching continues onto the door cards, where it appears in a black leather accent panel.
In front of the driver sits a steering wheel with the same design as found in the Aston Martin One77, wrapped in two-tone red and black leather, while the center stack and shift paddles are finished in carbon fiber.
Representing the latest expression of Aston Martin and Zagato’s legendary collaboration, this Vanquish Zagato unites breathtaking styling with exhilarating performance in a thoroughly modern grand touring automobile. Produced in strictly limited numbers and combining handcrafted British engineering with timeless Italian design, it presents an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of the marque’s most distinctive modern creations.
