c. 1963 Ferrari Tipo 163 V-12 Engine

Ferrari’s Tipo 163 V-12 represented the ultimate evolution of Gioacchino Colombo’s legendary 12-cylinder engine, enlarged to 3,967 cc. Originally developed for Ferrari’s flagship 400 Superamerica, it produced approximately 340 hp in road trim before finding its way into the factory’s racing program, powering competition cars including the 330 TRI/LM, 330 LM Berlinetta, and 330 P. Bearing internal no. 58 SA, this engine was at one time fitted to chassis 0810, the first Ferrari “P” car and winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963. It is believed to have been installed during late 1963 or early 1964 while 0810 was campaigned by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team, updating the prototype to 330 P specification. The engine pad is correspondingly stamped with chassis no. 0810 and bears a period scrutineering stamp, possibly from the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1964. Appropriate for competition use, the engine is plumbed for an external dry sump oil tank and fitted with twin Marelli distributors, distinctive red wrinkle-finish cam covers, and six Weber 38 DCN carburetors – the same specification used on Ferrari’s celebrated 250 Testa Rossa and GTO. Offered separately from the chassis it once powered, this is a rare and evocative artifact from Ferrari’s golden era of endurance racing. Its connection to chassis 0810 makes it an exceptional piece of Ferrari competition history, ideally suited to museum display or as an important spare component for a significant four-liter Ferrari.
