Gooding & Company Achieves Consecutive 100% Sell-Through Rate with its Second Phil Hill Automobilia Collection Sale, Totals Over $1 Million

The Herbert Johnson Racing Helmet became the most valuable lot from “A Life in Racing, selling for $193,750.

Santa Monica, Calif. (February 19, 2021) – Gooding & Company, the renowned auction house celebrated for selling the world’s most significant and valuable collector cars and automobilia, achieved $1,156,156 at its second Geared Online Phil Hill Automobilia Collection sale. The two-week online only auction sold all 306 lots for a successful 100% sell-through rate, with 64% of the offerings selling above their pre-auction estimates.

The Herbert Johnson Racing Helmet, worn by Phil Hill during his maiden victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, took home the top prize of the auction, selling for $193,750, with the Rolex “Zenith” Daytona Watch, ref. 16520, coming in second at $100,000. Additional time pieces, such as the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, ref. 16234 and a “Ford Division Total Performance Team 1963” Wittnauer Watch both performed exceptionally well, selling for $20,000 and $10,937 respectively. One of the most exciting lots, an Original Script for the 1966 MGM Film Grand Prix, shattered its $4,000 high estimate when it sold for $63,750. Many of the racing suits, jackets, and helmets worn by Hill in his championship-winning years were also on offer, with the Ford/Shelby American Cobra Team Jacket c.1963 selling for a record price of $61,250, a Two-Piece Dunlop Driving Suit achieving $10,625, and Phil Hill’s 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans Driver Armband and Two Hinchman Two-Piece Driving Suits realizing $10,625. Several collectibles that performed exceptionally well in the sale include trophies won during Hill’s formative racing years; such as the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans Distance Cup, Hill’s 12 Hours of Sebring overall winner’s trophy, and the first place 1956 Swedish Grand Prix trophy which sold for $6,562.

Gooding & Company’s final Phil Hill Automobilia Collection sale will be “Treasures from the Hill Garage.” The online only auction will begin on Monday, March 15th and run through Friday, March 26th, with lots beginning to close at 9:00 AM PDT on the final day of the sale. The final of three sales dedicated to the legendary American racecar driver includes personal items Hill collected outside of the world of racing -- from vintage music boxes and record players to spare parts and components from Hill’s successful restoration business.
