New York, N.Y. (October 12, 2026) – Gooding Christie’s, the official auction house of the inaugural Retromobile New York, has announced two 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom IIIs from the stable of Lord Bamford, Chairman of JCB – the world-famous engineering concern and one of Britain’s most successful family-owned businesses. Noted car collector for over 50 years, Lord Bamford’s stable includes some of the most important postwar sports and racing cars of all time, complementing significant prewar and luxury cars. The two Phantoms here, both meticulously restored and maintained under the owner’s world-class care, will cross the auction block during Gooding Christie’s New York City debut at Retromobile New York on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21, offered without reserve.
On offer is a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Special Henley Coupe (Estimate: $450,000 – $650,000, Without Reserve) featuring coachwork by J.S. Inskip. Acquired new by Mrs. Margaret Dunlop of New York, this Phantom III joined the collection of Lord Bamford in 2011, who purchased it at Gooding & Company’s eighth annual Pebble Beach Auctions. Since then, the Rolls-Royce has benefitted from a breathtaking $2,000,000 restoration by marque specialists Clark & Carter. This monumental, no-expense-spared undertaking, where every element of the vehicle was rebuilt or renewed, spanned the course of over eight years, resulting in one of the finest examples of such a car extant. Following this restoration, the Phantom III was shown at the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, where it was fittingly awarded First in Class.
Also offered is a 1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Sedanca de Ville (Estimate: $450,000 – $650,000, Without Reserve) donning coachwork by Park Ward & Co. Formerly owned by a number of prominent stewards, including renowned collector Malcolm Pray, this Phantom III Sedanca de Ville joined the stable of Lord Bamford in 2014. Over the course of the last decade, it has been expertly maintained, including a recent extensive engine rebuild by marque specialists. One of the most stylish Phantom IIIs in the world, this Rolls-Royce is the recipient of multiple concours awards, having been exhibited at events like the Cartier Style et Luxe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2016, as well as Salon Privé.
James Knight, the UK based Consultant & Senior Specialist at Gooding Christie’s, commented: “We are honored to present these magnificent motorcars to market on behalf of Lord Bamford. Known for impeccable taste and exacting standards, the Lord Bamford’s Phantoms can boast incredible provenance and represent the very best of prewar engineering, style and excellence.”
