As the successor to the legendary 300 SL series built from 1954 to 1962, the W113 SL had enormous shoes to fill. The German automaker shifted the focus of the SL to be more of a volume seller, and the Paul Bracq-designed roadster was lauded from new as the next great Mercedes-Benz.

In addition to having a fuel-injected, inline six-cylinder engine, four-wheel independent suspension, and all-around disc brakes, the 280 SL was the first sports car to feature a unibody construction with front and rear deformation zones. The use of an aluminum hood, door skins, and deck lid made the car lighter in weight, which could be further reduced with the removal of its “Pagoda”-shaped roof, for which the car is nicknamed.

Finished in its original rare and desirable shade of Arabian Grey, this lovely 280 SL features a well-preserved original blue interior, and benefits from recent and extensive cosmetic and mechanical work by marque-expert Tony Labella. As documented by invoices on file, work included new shocks and extensive detail work to the paint, concours-correct engine compartment, trunk, and underside of the car. Numerous service receipts from previous ownership account for replated brightwork, new body seals, carpet, and soft top, refinished wood trim, and regular maintenance. All told, this striking 280 SL shows pride of ownership and a commitment to presentation. With its unique and alluring color combination, this Mercedes-Benz roadster will fit well in any collection.
