Beginning with September 1969 production, Porsche introduced a comprehensively updated 911 range. While retaining the slightly lengthened wheelbase adopted the previous year to improve stability at the limit, the new models benefited from further chassis refinements including a rear anti-roll bar, KONI shock absorbers, and ventilated disc brakes at all four corners. Engine displacement increased to 2.2 liters, delivering improved flexibility and driveability throughout the range.

At the top of the lineup stood the 911 S. Equipped with higher-compression pistons, revised camshafts, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection, the flagship model produced an impressive 180 hp, establishing itself as one of the most capable and desirable sports cars of its era. When Road & Track tested a new 911 S in March 1970, the magazine recorded a top speed of 144 mph and described its performance as being “on the order of an American Supercar,” while praising its communicative steering and remarkable blend of performance, refinement, and everyday usability.

According to its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 1971 Porsche 911 S was delivered new through Porsche Salzburg in Austria. Finished in elegant Silver Metallic (8080) over black leatherette upholstery with Pepita inserts, it was specified with an unusually comprehensive list of factory options, including an electric sunroof, power windows, tinted glass, yellow auxiliary lamps, headrests, and three-point seat belts.

Most notably, the factory build sheet records Sonderwünsch (Special Request) No. 790, specifying preparation for installation of a Becker Mexico Olympia radio supplied without the radio unit itself. Significantly, the notation further states that this special provision was made at the request of Herr Wolfgang Porsche, the youngest son of Ferry Porsche and future Chairman of Porsche AG. The build documentation additionally indicates that the car was designated for collection through Porsche’s Tourist Delivery program.

The car’s Austrian inspection certificate confirms that it was approved for registration on July 26, 1971, under Porsche Konstruktionen KG of Salzburg. While not documented within the accompanying factory records, correspondence cited in the car’s history file indicates that Porsche Salzburg later confirmed the car was fitted with leather upholstery and a driver’s sport seat at the request of a member of the Porsche family, who subsequently used the car while carrying Austrian registration “S 4.850.” Such details suggest that this 911 S occupied a position somewhat beyond that of a typical production automobile, benefiting from special factory attention and an apparent connection to the Porsche family itself. Regardless of the precise nature of its early use, the documentation establishes an unusually close association with Porsche’s internal organization during the model’s formative years.

In 1976, the Porsche was acquired by another Austrian enthusiast, who reportedly retained ownership for approximately four decades. During this lengthy stewardship, the car received careful maintenance and a restoration completed during the mid-1990s. Additional mechanical and cosmetic work was later carried out under German ownership. Following export to the US, the front seats were returned to their distinctive Pepita-trimmed configuration.

Maintained within a significant Porsche collection since 2024, this highly specified 911 S combines the performance and character that define Porsche’s celebrated 2.2-liter flagship with an intriguing connection to the Porsche family itself. Accompanied by its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, factory build records, and supporting history file, it represents a particularly compelling example of one of the most sought-after variants of the early 911.
