As one of the most daring and coveted grand touring automobiles ever produced, the Citroën SM was developed in the wake of the Citroën-Maserati corporate marriage of 1968. Handsomely styled and based upon Citroën’s front-drive chassis, the SM featured the marque’s unique and super-smooth hydropneumatic suspension, with power delivered by a great-sounding, four-cam Maserati V-6 engine. A true grand touring car par excellence, the SM featured a beautifully styled and comfortable passenger compartment, making it ideal for fast transcontinental dashes or high-speed executive commutes. Nearly 13,000 were built from 1970 through 1975 (including a handful of coachbuilt versions by Chapron), with production tailing off to about 2,600 for model year 1973. North American imports were low when new, supporting strong demand for quality examples.

Purchased by the Mullin Collection in California in 2015, this 1973 Citroën SM continues to benefit from the care it received under previous ownership. According to a history summary on file, the SM was repainted in its original color by Rick Bacon, of the television series PowerBlock, and the upholstery was renewed using correct leather pieces supplied by Italy’s Atelier DS.

*Please note that all of the Lots in this Auction have been in long-term static storage at the Mullin Automotive Museum and may not be currently operational. They will require mechanical attention and in some cases significant restoration prior to any road use.
