The 1970s brought an ever-larger lineup from Honda, which was taking advantage of America’s enthusiasm for motorcycling. Honda had yet to offer a bike for long-distance touring and when the time came, the company made sure – as it had throughout its history – that it advanced two-wheel technology with a revolutionary new model, the GL1000 Gold Wing. Launched for the 1975 model year, the Gold Wing ushered in a number of advancements for Japanese motorcycles, which included the first water-cooled four-stroke engine, rubber camshaft drive belts, and the first shaft-drive. Journalists at the time remarked on the silken and effortless riding experience, which came with surprising performance from the 80 hp four cylinder.

The 1978 model year brought an updated Gold Wing, such as the bike offered here. Refinements included a halogen headlight, additional instrumentation, revised engine tuning, and Comstar solid wheels.

This 1978 model has had just three owners from new and remains in amazingly original condition, showing approximately 2,900 miles. It was purchased by the consignor in 1999 from Robert Russell of Carmel, California, then showing around 2,800 miles. In current ownership, the Gold Wing has remained in climate-controlled storage as part of a large and significant collection of Honda motorcycles, and used sparingly. It is accompanied by correspondence, articles, manuals, and other documentation.

Nearly 50 years after its introduction, Honda is still building Gold Wings, which have remained the standard by which all other touring motorcycles are judged. The formula has changed little from this 1978 model, demonstrating how the incredible qualities of this machine have stood the test of time.
