In 1980, Fiat introduced the Panda, a brilliantly conceived automobile rooted in simplicity, versatility, and practicality. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Aldo Mantovani of Italdesign, it was a modern redefinition of the Fiat 500 (cinquecento), but optimized to accommodate 50 liters of wine in the storage area, along with four occupants. Nearly 4.5 million examples of the first-generation Pandas were built over its 23-year production run. In 1983, a four-wheel-drive version was introduced; its off-road capabilities made it a smashing success. The late first-generation Panda 4x4 presented here is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox and 48 hp 965 cc four-cylinder gasoline engine. Finished in Grigio Metallizzato (Metallic Gray) with woodgrain accents, the Panda features one of the most visually captivating interiors of its decade, which utilized fascinating modern design concepts. Its grid-pattern electric green bucket seats, with fabric by Knoll, are accompanied by matching dash and door-panel trim. The storage area in the dash utilizes a simple hammock design, and the ashtray can be repositioned for each front passenger. A comprehensive, photo-documented restoration by Gulfblue in Bologna, Italy, was completed in 2020. A large roof-mounted basket has been fitted, allowing for the transport of picnic, camping, and vacation-related equipment. Among the most beloved utilitarian cars, this Fiat impresses with its stylish simplicity.
