Produced from 1994 through 1998, the Porsche 993 marked both the culmination of the air-cooled era and the end of a chapter in 911 history that began in 1964. Extensively re-engineered from its predecessor, the 993 featured revised styling, improved aerodynamics, and an advanced multi-link rear suspension that transformed the model’s handling characteristics while preserving the distinctive feel that had long defined the 911.
Introduced in 1997 and built for only two model years, the Carrera S combined the naturally aspirated rear-wheel-drive Carrera with the wider bodywork of the Turbo. Distinguished by its flared rear fenders, broader track, and muscular stance, the Carrera S offered much of the visual presence of Porsche’s flagship model while retaining the lighter weight and engaging driving dynamics of the standard Carrera.
In a September 1997 road test, Car and Driver characterized the Carrera S as a fitting finale to the air-cooled era, with editor Csaba Csere stating, “This latest 911 incarnation is admirably tight, impressively practical, and highly charismatic, with an engine that feels and sounds energetic, lively steering, and terrific grip. Sure, I’m eagerly awaiting the new model, but if I were sentenced to drive this Carrera S every day for the next five years, I’d still be a happy man.”
Finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over Boxster Red leather, this 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S was specified with the desirable six-speed manual gearbox. Factory options include 18” Sport Classic II wheels, the Engine Sound Package, limited-slip differential, stainless steel oval exhaust outlets, aluminum-look instrument dials with chromed rings, stainless steel door entry guards, poweradjustable heated seats, leather dashboard and door panels, cruise control, rear window wiper, Becker Porsche CDR-210 CD radio, and a power sunroof. The option sticker further notes Porsche Exclusive equipment (9991), reflecting the car’s highly individualized specification.
This Carrera S was sold new in Canada, but soon after delivery it was exported to the US, where it was subsequently titled in Florida. Accompanying CARFAX and AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports trace the car’s subsequent history through Florida and later Georgia, where it remained for nearly two decades.
Around 2001, this Carrera S is believed to have passed to Robert W. Kuchenbecker of Georgia, longtime Porsche Club of America Peachstate Region member. During his ownership, the Carrera S earned numerous concours accolades, including a President’s Choice Award at PCA’s Visit 3.0 gathering in 2003, First in Class honors in Full Division competition at the 2010 Porsche Parade Concours, and a Sponsor’s Choice Award at the 2017 Porsche Club of America Werks Reunion at Amelia Island.
Showing just 44,752 km, or approximately 27,800 miles, at the time of cataloguing, the Porsche has been carefully maintained and preserved. Since being acquired by the consignor, this Carrera S has benefited from extensive servicing, new tires, and cosmetic detailing in preparation for this sale.
Representing the final year of 993 production and the last generation of the air-cooled 911, the Carrera S is widely regarded as one of the most appealing variants of the model range, combining the dramatic wide-body appearance of the Turbo with the purity, lighter weight, and rear-wheel-drive character of the standard Carrera. Accompanied by its original books, tools, jack, and air compressor, it represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a low-mileage, well-preserved, and ideally specified example of one of the most desirable air-cooled 911s.
