Gooding & Company to Offer Significant No-Reserve Collections at 20th Annual Pebble Beach Auctions; Additional Early Selections Announced

The auction house will present highlights from The Santa Fe Collection and the Thomas H. Larsen Collection without reserve, in addition to a Ferrari 330 GTS, a Lamborghini Miura S, and a BMW 507.

Santa Monica, Calif. (June 11, 2024) — The official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, Gooding & Company, will return for its 20th year at the world’s foremost collector car venue this summer to conduct its annual two-day sale, taking place on Friday, August 16 and Saturday, August 17. The sale will feature notable selections from the Santa Fe Collection and the Thomas H. Larsen Collection, both offered entirely without reserve. The auction house has also unveiled additional exciting additions to the sale, including a no-reserve 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, a recently discovered 1970 Lamborghini Miura P400 S, and a 1957 BMW 507 Series II.

From the Santa Fe Collection The Santa Fe Collection was carefully compiled over many years by a meticulous enthusiast and collector. His true passion is driving and touring, rather than concours exhibition, culminating in a collection centered on cars acquired primarily for their unique performance capabilities. The cars in the Santa Fe Collection have been housed at the owner’s classic car facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico and attended to by his full-time collection manager. Gooding & Company is proud to offer 10 cars from this esteemed private collection at the 2024 Pebble Beach Auctions.

“I’ve known and admired these cars for quite some time, and was fortunate to experience them on the great roads of Santa Fe,” said Angus Dykman, Gooding & Company Specialist. “The variety of this collection is marvelous, ranging from a Lincoln Continental to a Porsche 918 Spyder, epitomizing the many different forms of driving enjoyment to be had in this fantastic hobby.”

The centerpiece of the Santa Fe Collection is the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder (Estimate: $1,200,000 – $1,500,000, Without Reserve), a one-owner example from new. The 57th of 294 such cars delivered to the US, this 918 is finished in captivating Liquid Metal Silver, a $63,000 option. Post-purchase, the consignor elected to add the attractive carbon fiber rear diffuser blades from the 918 Weissach package, adding to this Porsche’s visual appeal. Other Porsche offerings from the collection include a low-mileage 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe Exclusive Series (Estimate: $250,000 – $300,000, Without Reserve) and a stunning Ravenna Green over Black and Pepita interior 1970 Porsche 914/6 (Estimate: $100,000 – $150,000, Without Reserve). The 914/6 is the recipient of a thorough restoration documented with over $300,000 in receipts, and is fitted with a 3.2-liter flat-six Porsche 911 engine, a 915 gearbox, and mild performance upgrades, allowing for an especially fun driving experience.

A multiple class winner in numerous prestigious concours, including First in Class at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, the beautiful Oyster Shell over Cream 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II (Estimate: $400,000 – $500,000, Without Reserve) brings show-quality flair to the collection. The DB4 recently underwent an engine rebuild by Robert Webster’s R.W. Fabrications in Phoenix, Arizona. An elegant white over black 1967 Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato (Estimate: $275,000 – $325,000, Without Reserve) also presents a rare opportunity as one of less than 200 Super Sport Flaminias built. A stylish and elegant 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (Estimate: $140,000 – $160,000, Without Reserve) fitted with luggage is also on offer, with work completed by Bob Smith Coachworks of Gainesville, Texas.

A pair of 1968 Maserati Ghibli 4.7s add mid-century Italian style: a fastidiously restored example (Estimate: $250,000 – $300,000, Without Reserve) finished in Metallic Gray over tan leather, and a striking dark blue over red example (Estimate: $175,000 – $225,000, Without Reserve). Two American favorites round out the collection – a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner (Estimate: $120,000 – $140,000, Without Reserve) finished in beautiful Blue Fire paint over a light blue vinyl interior, and an iconic black over black 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible (Estimate: $60,000 – $90,000, Without Reserve).

From the Thomas H. Larsen Collection The Thomas H. Larsen Collection consists of carefully chosen, exceptional examples of some of the world’s most iconic classic cars. The late Tom Larsen was known and loved by the Boston car collecting community, and was a major supporter of the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline. Mr. Larsen assembled this collection over many years, and had his fleet of vehicles maintained by some of the East Coast’s foremost specialists. He and his wife were active participants in many classic car tours and rallies, including the Colorado Grand and the Copperstate 1000.

“The range and quality of this collection is quite impressive, and speaks to Mr. Larsen’s dedication, meticulous attention, and passion,” said Dykman. “I knew Tom quite well and really enjoyed spending time with him over the years, so this collection is particularly close to my heart.”

Leading the Thomas H. Larsen Collection is a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (Estimate: $1,200,000 – $1,500,000, Without Reserve) finished in the dramatic color combination of black over red leather. Also offered is a 1964 Shelby 289 Cobra (Estimate: $950,000 – $1,100,000, Without Reserve) with fascinating provenance, including television use in the 1965-66 ABC detective series, Honey West, starring Anne Francis. Additional European offerings from the collection consist of a Ferrari Classiche-certified 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC (Estimate: $500,000 – $600,000, Without Reserve), a 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT (Estimate: $375,000 – $475,000, Without Reserve) finished in Blu Chiaro Metallizzato, and a lovely 1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster (Estimate: $350,000 – $450,000, Without Reserve).

English selections from the collection include a factory left-hand drive 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series I (Estimate: $375,000 – $475,000, Without Reserve) presented in iconic metallic green over green leather, as well as a professionally restored 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2-Litre Fixed Head Coupe (Estimate: $175,000 – $225,000, Without Reserve). The highly desirable, late Series I example is a multiple Jaguar Club of North America Concours d’Elegance Class Winner, and comes accompanied by a JDHT certificate. Also joining the Thomas H. Larsen Collection is a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette 283/283 Fuel-Injected Roadster (Estimate: $70,000 – $90,000, Without Reserve), a 1955 Ford Thunderbird (Estimate: $40,000 – $60,000, Without Reserve), a 1935 Ford Model 48 Deluxe Roadster (Estimate: $40,000 – $60,000, Without Reserve), and a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E 320 Cabriolet (Estimate: $20,000 – $30,000, Without Reserve).

Additional Early Consignments:

1957 BMW 507 Series II (Estimate: $2,200,000 – $2,500,000) Gooding & Company is proud to offer this 1957 BMW 507 Series II, available for sale for the first time in 50 years. Chassis no. 70089 is one of just 252 examples of BMW’s immortal 507 model, and is one of a very few examples with period racing history. It was campaigned by well-known Porsche driver and Le Mans participant Helmut Glöckler, who piloted the 507 in multiple hillclimb races from 1958 to 1959. Between 1974 and 2014, 70089 was owned by two brothers in Northern California, sequestered away with the famed ex-Elvis Presley 507, Chassis 70079. After emerging from hiding, both cars underwent a complete, concours-quality restoration by BMW Classic from 2014 to 2016, during which time 70089 was returned to its original factory colors of Papyrus over blue leather. As part of the restoration, this 507 was upgraded with front disc brakes, a set of reproduction Rudge knock-off wheels, and a NOS Becker Mexico radio. Following this exhaustive project, 70089 was flown out alongside its longtime stablemate to be shown at BMW’s 100th anniversary event at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. It was also named by Robb Report as “the best automobile for Season Nine of Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Today, this important 507 comes to auction with a comprehensive history file dating back to its original owner, and is eligible for countless historic tours and rallies, including the 1000 Miglia.

1970 Lamborghini Miura P400 S (Estimate: $2,000,000 – $2,500,000) This 1970 Lamborghini Miura P400 S, chassis 4614, is an especially exciting discovery in recent memory, having been freshly unearthed in Long Island, New York, where it was kept in its long-term owner’s living room for over 35 years. This late-series Miura S benefits from the myriad improvements made during the original production run, including a strengthened chassis, revised suspension, and ventilated braking system – making for the ultimate narrow-bodied Miura. This unrestored, Bertone-bodied example is presented in its striking original color of Luci del Bosco, complimented with two-tone beige and cloth upholstery. Retaining its matching-numbers engine and stamped body panels per factory documentation, 4614 presents a unique opportunity to acquire an unrestored, previously unknown Miura S in a wonderful color combination strongly evocative of the period from which it originates.

1967 Ferrari 330 GTS (Estimate: $2,000,000 – $2,500,000, Without Reserve) The epitome of mid-1960s GT styling, this Pininfarina-bodied 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS is a rare and exclusive open Ferrari as one of only 99 such examples built. Originally delivered to California via Luigi Chinetti Motors, chassis 10703 comes with known provenance from new, and presents strikingly in black over green upholstery with Borrani wire wheels and period-correct Irvin “parachute” seat belts. In recent years, this 330 GTS has been carefully maintained, receiving service and attention from highly regarded Ferrari specialists in Southern California. Offered with a Marcel Massini report and extensive documentation on file, 10703 presents an exciting opportunity as a no-reserve lot at the upcoming Pebble Beach Auctions.
